One main theme of the seminar is crises of Ukrainian and how it may influence Barents cooperation. Professor Aileen Espiritu from Barents Institute at University of Tromsø will talk about the future of the research. Peter Sköld, director of Arctic Research Centre at Umeå University go into the challenges of the Barents research. Research professor Monica Tennberg from Arctic Centre at University of Lapland speaks about politics of Barents research.

Moreover, other themes are the mining industry, education, trade and politics of knowledge. The aim of this symposium is to advance collaboration among senior and younger scholars; to network with new potential contributors; and to discuss with various stakeholders about the state and future of research and collaboration in the Barents Region.

The seminar is organized to celebrate the establishment of the new academic journal, Barents Studies: Peoples, Economies and Politics. The project is coordinated by Arctic Centre at University of Lapland and the journal is the result of current regional research cooperation in the Barents Region. The establishment of this journal has been made possible thanks to the funding of a two-year project by the EU Kolarctic ENPI CBC Programme.
