"The international winter school is aimed at basic training of students and specialists from Japan, dealing with the Arctic sustainable development issues, on the example of Yakutia. A series of lectures in natural and social sciences will help to train future leaders and experts in the field of Arctic cooperation and sustainable development of this region", said Vladlen Kungurov, Vice-Rector for International cooperation at NEFU, adding that the co-organiser of the school is the Hokkaido University Arctic Research Center.
The winter school is organized within the framework of the joint laboratory, established in 2016 by NEFU, Hokkaido University and the Institute for Biological Problems of Cryolithozone (Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences).
In addition to this, there is a joint Russian-Japanese master programme "The sustainable development of the Arctic" at NEFU. According to Yumiko Miyamoto, the programme coordinator, a basic course is prepared for the participants of the winter school: "We have chosen not only students, but professionals working in both private and state sectors. The aim of the programme is to train experts, who will have deep knowledge about the Arctic development". The main sponsor of the programme is the Japan Arctic Research Network Center.
UArctic President Lars Kullerud has given a lecture on international cooperation in the Arctic for the students of winter school.
