The MNGD is the only program of its kind in North America and offers students the unique opportunity to focus on northern issues. Students in the Master of Northern Governance and Development program take courses on northern resource economics and policy, northern governance, Aboriginal self-determination, professional communications, and program planning and evaluation, as well as participate in a research internship with a northern organization to develop practical working skills and research capacity.

The MNGD is not a traditional research-based graduate program. Rather, it seeks to provide students with a professional development experience that will contribute to their ability to provide leadership and positive change within their northern communities.

The program works in partnership with Northern and Aboriginal communities, industry, and government on economic development and governance issues in Northern Saskatchewan. At the completion of the program, graduates will be able to successfully lead northern development in Saskatchewan and elsewhere.

Although residents of Northern Saskatchewan communities and applicants associated with Northern Aboriginal communities, organizations and agencies have priority for admission, international students interested in northern issues are also encouraged to apply.

The MNGD is an interdisciplinary, project-based program that includes coursework, an internship and a 10-day international field school. It's designed to be completed over two years and students have the option to work while studying or work towards the degree full-time. There is funding support of $16,000 over two years available for qualified applicants.

Application deadline: 1 May 2014
