Alexander Driker, deputy director of the Northern Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Department has informed that excursions to the ship “Professor Molchanov” to investigate surroundings where students will be working during 40 days will be held after May the 10th. The students will also visit museum of Northern Hydrometeorology and Environment Monitoring Department to get to know specific of work in the arctic conditions. Dmitry Polikin, coordinator of the project,  told about scientific fields within which participants of the expedition will work.

There are four of them: hydrometeorology, environmental studies, physicochemical studies, and bioresources. These fields include following directions: oceanography, meteorology, coastal studies, seismology, glaciology, hydro chemical radiological studies, monitoring of aquatic system pollution, sea and coastal biorecourses, soil pollution, hydro biological studies of island fresh water systems.

In the meeting, young researchers were explained that they will be isolated from outside world: mobile connection will end at the island “Mudiug” in the White Sea and there will be no internet connection in the Arctic. It will be possible to make stops during trip depending on ice condition and presence of polar bears in the certain area.

All NArFU participants will be provided with special clothes: winter shoes, warm pullover, overall, jacket and hat, they will also need lab coat and warm gloves. Students having practice on the “Floating University” will be instructed for safe work in the Arctic environment.

Representatives of NArFU media center will also accompany the expedition to make movie about the exploration and records in the diary for NArFU web site.
