The applicant may be a natural or social scientist, artist, political leader, or practitioner. Areas of research/expertise might include (but are not limited) to the following: indigenous governance; adaptation of northern communities to environmental and social change, security issues (e.g. health issues, food sovereignty, education, culture and language); northern economies; processes that are controlling the physical and biogeochemical changes in the Arctic, such as the impact of the state of the atmosphere and the ocean on sea-ice distributions and land ice melt; impact of physical changes on marine ecosystems, changes in biodiversity; and the changing transportation pathways in the Arctic Ocean.

The Arctic Studies chair will spend Winter or Spring Quarter 2014 in residence at the University of Washington. S/he will teach a 3-credit seminar course as part of the new Arctic Studies minor, provide the annual Fulbright public lecture, and otherwise contribute to and participate in the intellectual life of the University and the Future of Ice initiative.
