The PhD positions are linked to the wider FiDiPro project Human-environment relations in the North – resource development, climate change and resilience led by Professor Mark Nuttall, University of Alberta, Canada visiting at Thule Institute in 2007-2011.
 
The successful candidates will carry out research in the circumpolar North that will increase critical, scholarly, and policy-relevant knowledge on a topic related to any of the following areas: environmental change and resource use issues in rural and coastal communities; large-scale industrial development; the social and economic impacts of climate change; the changing nature of family, household, community and work; depopulation and migration; health and community well-being; and the human dimensions of global environmental and sustainability issues. The geographical area is open.
 
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Social/Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related subject, and will write their dissertation in a relevant discipline. The successful candidates will be located at Thule Institute at University of Oulu, Finland and enrolled in one of the three graduate schools whose themes support the research programme of the Thule Institute. Under the FiDiPro programme there are opportunities to spend a period as a visiting graduate student at the University of Alberta, Canada. 
 
Salary will be based on job demands levels 1-4 of the new salary system for teaching and research staff. In addition, on the basis of personal work performance up to 46 % of the job demands level can be paid.
