Anna’s geophysics studies began at the University of Oulu, where she received her master degree in 1998. Her research focused on sea ice in the Baltic Sea with ground penetrating radar. Following on a similar theme, Anna’s PhD research has focused on Scharffenbergbotnen, a blue ice area in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Although Anna has worked primarily from the Arctic Centre in Rovaniemi, Finland, her PhD degree is from the University of Oulu, Finland. Throughout her PhD studies, Anna has been involved in many publications, and has also taught courses for the Arctic Studies Program at the University of Lapland, in Rovaniemi.

Anna says that her involvement with the UArctic began as a student from the University of Oulu, a member institution. She also participated in some studies from the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), another UArctic member. Anna was also invited by the UArctic to attend an ICARP meeting in Copenhagen in 2005.

‘I'd encourage more students to orientate to natural sciences and to complement their studies by other disciplines to achieve multidisciplinary understanding of the Arctic. Arctic nature is very vulnerable for the global warming and it's especially important to study the changes and their consequencies in the Arctic. I also encourage students to take advantage of the possibility to take courses from other universities in the Arctic (UArctic network that is)’
